X-Zelit research

Science-backed calcium support before calving.

X-Zelit is used in the close-up period to support the cow’s natural calcium response before the sudden calcium demand of calving and early milk production.

Research focus

X-Zelit is built around a different pre-calving strategy: it primarily reduces the availability of dietary phosphorus to help trigger the cow's own calcium response before calving. Synthetic zeolite A can also interact with calcium and magnesium in the rumen, so the complete close-up ration should remain properly balanced.

Mode of action

A different pathway for transition cow calcium management.

X-Zelit temporarily reduces available dietary phosphorus in the close-up diet. This helps trigger the cow’s own calcium mobilisation response before calving, when calcium demand rises sharply.

Step 1

Feed before calving

X-Zelit is used in the close-up ration before calving, when the cow is preparing for the calcium demand of lactation.

Step 2

Bind available phosphorus

The product binds dietary phosphorus, temporarily reducing phosphorus availability in the pre-fresh diet.

Step 3

Activate calcium mobilisation

By influencing the phosphorus and FGF23 pathway, X-Zelit supports the cow’s natural release of calcium from body reserves.

Step 4

Prepare for calving

The goal is to have the cow better prepared before milk production creates the highest calcium pressure.

Why it matters

Milk fever is only the visible part of the calcium challenge.

Clinical milk fever is easy to see. Subclinical hypocalcaemia is harder to spot, but it can still affect fresh cow health, feed intake, immune function and early lactation performance.

Calcium balance around calving

Cows need a fast calcium response as milk production begins and calcium demand increases.

Fresh cow health

Better transition support helps reduce the pressure that low calcium can place on the cow after calving.

Simpler close-up management

X-Zelit is designed to work without the same urine pH testing and low-potassium forage requirements associated with acidified DCAD programs.

Research themes

What the research and field evidence focuses on.

X-Zelit research and technical material commonly focus on calcium status, hypocalcaemia risk, fresh cow outcomes and the practical management of the close-up diet.

Research area What it looks at Why it matters on farm
Calcium mobilisation The cow’s ability to release and regulate calcium around calving. Supports the cow before calcium demand rises sharply with milk production.
Phosphorus pathway The role of phosphorus availability and the FGF23 pathway in calcium regulation. Provides a different approach from traditional acidified DCAD strategies.
Clinical and subclinical hypocalcaemia Visible milk fever and hidden low-calcium pressure after calving. Subclinical cases can affect fresh cow performance even when cows are not visibly down.
Fresh cow performance Reported outcomes such as early milk yield, feed intake, colostrum quality and post-calving health indicators. Transition success is measured by how cows perform after calving, not just whether they avoid clinical milk fever.
Evidence in context

Research-backed does not mean complicated.

X-Zelit gives dairy farms a practical way to support calcium balance before calving without turning the close-up program into a high-monitoring acidified DCAD system.

Pre-calving use

Works before the pressure point

The product is used before calving, giving the cow time to activate her own calcium response.

Practical feeding

Fits close-up rations

X-Zelit can be included in the close-up feeding program with support from the farm’s nutritionist or adviser.

Commercial relevance

Focuses on fresh cow outcomes

The value of transition support is seen after calving: healthier cows, better starts and fewer disruptions.

Independent evidence

What the evidence consistently supports

Across independent zeolite A feeding studies reviewed by Dairy Australia, the most consistent findings are higher blood calcium around calving, less subclinical hypocalcaemia and less clinical milk fever, when used as part of a properly formulated close-up ration. The table below shows these consistent effects first, followed by outcomes that vary between studies. X-Zelit is removed at calving.

Measure (feeding zeolite A before calving)Reported effect
Blood calcium around calvingIncreased
Subclinical hypocalcaemiaReduced
Clinical milk feverReduced
Blood phosphorus (while feeding)Reduced — temporary
Blood magnesium (while feeding)Reduced — temporary
Outcomes that vary between studies
Pre-calving dry-matter intakeVariable / often reduced
Milk yield & compositionNo consistent effect demonstrated

Australian data

Local trial results for Australian dairy conditions.

In one Australian commercial trial, cows fed X-Zelit had stronger post-calving blood calcium than the DCAD group. That trial also reported higher milk yield and rumination; independent reviews of zeolite A studies have not shown a consistent effect on milk yield, fertility or immunity (Dairy Australia, 2021).

Calcium status

Stronger post-calving calcium response

Local results support X-Zelit’s role in preparing cows for the calcium demand that arrives at calving.

Milk production

What the wider evidence shows

Independent reviews of zeolite A studies report higher blood calcium and less milk fever, but no consistent effect on milk yield (Dairy Australia, 2021). The higher yield seen locally is reported as a single-trial result.

Fresh cow indicators

Areas still being studied

Rumination and reproduction trends were noted in the local trial. These are not yet established for zeolite A in the wider literature, so we do not present them as proven benefits.
